Exploring

Hello everyone , I do hope this finds all well in your part of the world.

For the first time ever ( that’s me always late to the party) I have embraced the word of the year and mine is explore. I was torn between “explore” and” learn” as I plan to do both this year but are they mutually exclusive , I believe they go hand in hand.

Whether you are exploring your own back yard as in this post or exploring far afield you are always learning or at least you should be.

Today I was exploring Inveresk, an area of my town that was home to the railyard and workshops that remained unloved for many years before becoming home to the Queen Victoria Museum and several campuses of the university. While I was out of action for part of last year several changes had taken place , many new structures as well as a community garden. I came across the changes on a walk over the Christmas period and was determined to see more.

John in his Summer uniform of shorts , dark tee shirt, cap and sneakers, checking out the garden beds in the community garden. His brown shoulder bag has seen much of the world since he purchased it in Amsterdam on our first overseas trip back in 1975.

Many of the original site features have been retained , I love the chimney details on the building below.

Not only do I plan to explore the world around me I also wish to explore more the things that are of interest to me . To that end I have started with a couple of online photography courses and hope to find some courses on fashion ( any suggestions most welcome) and anything else that takes my fancy .

On the clothing front I have committed to only buy five new items this year, secondhand is excluded but even then I will only bring home things I truly love and will wear for many years to come. I really hope this will make me more inventive in combining things I already own and up my creativity.

Today’s outfit is an Alistair Trung skirt (a recycle find a couple of years ago at Vintage Red Fox) made from a parachute fabric paired with a Nicola Waite white shirt that I have had for over ten years. I added Trippen sandals , that I love and do not wear enough , not sure why they are really comfortable and easy to wear. Note to self wear these shoes . My accessories for today were YSL sunglasses , also a few years old that now work so much better with my short hair , black earrings and fingerless gloves.

I really felt the gloves deserved a closeup. They were a birthday present to myself , well it’s not every day you turn 7o in Paris and come across your dream black leather and rhinestone gloves in Bon Marche , resistance was futile.

Wondering where this journey of exploration will lead me – who knows but I will enjoy learning about myself and the world around me along the way .

Joining Gail At Is This Mutton for Wow on Wednesday.

Explore and Learn could be my words for this year, too. I adore travelling and am currently doing an online course in Royal Fashion through the Ages (I bet you’d enjoy that, too!)
Your outfit is fabulous and I love the arch you’re posing by, it’s like a studded punk wrist cuff. John must have been one of the first men to embrace the man bag! I remember a male teacher having one at my grammar school in 1977 and being utterly fascinated by the concept of a male with a bag! xxx

Agreed , they do describe you perfectly. Your Royal Fashion through the ages sounds right up my street .
Now you mention it that arch is just like a punk wrist cuff. I did tell John about your teacher and his man bag. John’s has been well used over the years and has had several repairs . xxx

As always a very interesting post ! Good to see you looking so well and love your new hairstyle. A fashion blog I’ve recently been enjoying is by Gabriella Arruda. Lots of well researched information on all things style and fashion but a lot about style being more to do with developing personal expression ( you are marvellous at this) rather than sticking to rules. But having said that it also explores! body type, the David Kibbe system and so on as having this knowledge can help in developing our personal style. Enjoy
    All the best

I love your Trippen sandals, and your studded gloves are fabulous! I found a Megan Salmon (Aussie designer) skirt today in a thrift store that is very similar to what you’re wearing.

Keep exploring and looking for new things! Good luck with your course!

You must wear the Trippen sandals more often, they look fantastic and to hear they’re comfortable too, how rare is that! Love the skirt and rhinestone gloves. You have a very strong sense of style and know exactly what suits you.
Explore is a great WOTY. Mine is Laugh.
Look forward to seeing your explorations this year. The V&A does a lot of fashion courses online, people attend from all round the world, so might be worth looking at?
