A Night Away

Hello everyone , hope this finds all well in your part of the world.

Earlier this week John and I enjoyed a night away in our state’s capital city of Hobart . We often venture down for the day but it has been a little while since we shouted ourselves a hotel stay and had the chance to play tourist.

We dropped Raffy off at Pets Now Boarding for his overnight stay then headed down the highway to Hobart , it is about a two and half hour drive. We enjoyed lunch at a little cafe in the city , then went our separate ways for an hour or so to do our own thing (mine being checking out a few of my favourite stores and only purchasing some interesting new tights). We then checked in to our hotel for the night , which was the Moss Hotel at Salamanca Place. The hotel has been created within the mid 1800’s warehouses that were originally used for traders , stores and taverns . Today the lively area is a mix of restaurants , bars , art galleries and interesting retail spaces in the beautiful sandstone buildings.

Later in the afternoon we crossed the Derwent Bridge and drove down to join the family for dinner at their home . It was the first time I had seen Harry (now aged 6 ) in his school uniform.

After checking out of the hotel we drove to one of my favourite spots in Hobart , Battery Point. Battery Point is Hobart’s first suburb and widely regarded as the best preserved colonial era suburb in Australia.  Here I am standing outside one of the many cottages that would of housed the dock workers. Today the cottages are renovated , many with modern extensions and highly sought after with prices to match.

The area is a mix of workers cottages and also several rather grand mansions , that would have been the homes of the well to do merchants. I was rather impressed with this one with its immaculate front garden.

Anyone who has followed the blog for a while will know of my love of photographing interesting doors and this one with its leadlight was no exception.

After our meander around Battery Point we headed back to Salamanca Place to check out this stone structure we noticed the night before . As it turned out it relates to Dutch explorer Abel Tasman who was the first European explorer to reach land here in 1642 . Never encountering any of the original aboriginal residents , he initially named it Van Diemans Land after his sponsor , the Governor of the Dutch East Indies, but it was renamed in his honour when it became self governing in 1856. We were both intrigued with the details of these tiny bronze ships in full sail.

John on the left reading the various inscriptions and Abel Tasman on the right holding a globe and contemplating his explorations .

I couldn’t resist taking a shot of this charming Easter window at Norman and Dann , an incredible chocolate shop in Salamanca Place.

My outfit for day two in Hobart was the Dogstar yellow skirt , Paule Ka knit and cropped black leather jacket , tights and suede boots . There was an Autumn chill in the air.

Your post brings back so many happy memories of our time in Australia and Tasmania in particular. We actually had a drink on a warm early evening outside that pub in your photo, then think it was fish and chips at one of those many restaurants around the harbour.
    Love your leather jacket.

Thanks for sharing your visit to Hobart, Jill. Lovely photos – and that skirt is “you” – you’re looking very svelte and well (hoping that is the case).
I am taking time away from Instagram, it’s too full of advertising, and other people I don’t follow and have no interest in, Meta pushing too much “stuff” onto us, so I find I’m gravating back to reading more personalised blogs, thank you for yours.
    Love,
    Elizabeth.
