A Bag and Books

Hello everyone , hope all is well in your part of the world.

I found this pretty bag at a little second hand shop at Evandale about three years ago and today was its first outing. It is vintage Salvadore Ferragamo, made from rubber , and the store owner , offered it to me at a price too good to refuse. I am not one to collect designer bags but this one appealed to me.

It was the middle of Winter when I bought the bag and I simply placed the bag in its box in a drawer and promptly forgot about it . I planned to bring it out the following Summer but for this didn’t happen.

In the spirit of my wearing and using what I own today was the day. Fortunately our Autumn weather has kicked in bringing us cooler mornings and evenings with clear and sunny days.

Taken in the cool of the morning wearing my Moyuru pants and frilly white Moyuru top with a Mos Mosh floral jacket. I am always so pleased when jacket weather arrives as I do love them and have quite a collection.

The shoes and socks deserved a closeup , both items have been lurking unworn for a while, the pretty little socks were a Melbourne purchase in 2022 and the cream brogues by Polmo also sat in their box for way too long. This is the year for me to take stock and wear what I own .

Now onto books , it will come as to no surprise that I am a great lover of books relating to fashion and style and have collected many over the years, some bought retail or online , many thrift shop finds.

I often go back and re-read them several times and constantly use them for inspiration . I have several favourites , The Art of Dressing by Tziporah Salamon , my three Advanced Style ones , Bill Cunningham and Accidental Icon by Iris Apfel who passed away recently at aged 102.

Iris was an amazing woman who most certainly lived a very full life and inspired so many.

One of her famous quotes and there are many is “you have to be interested to be interesting”.  I do like this one as it fits my words of the year explore and learn.

What a fantastic bag! I’m so glad it got an outing and an outfit to show it off properly. I’m also evaluating my clothes – everything! constantly! I pored over your books – I must get those Advanced Style ones. I read his blog way back in the day.

Thank you Sheila , the bag was quite a find and I really should wear it more often. You are very good at evaluating your clothes and moving on those that no longer serve you. I think you would enjoy the Advanced Style books and would recognise many of Ari’s ladies from his blog.

What a super handbag – very unusual. While I don’t really do handbags I think I’d like one of those! Love the books you’ve got – also the necklace on display.

Thank you Penny, I’m not really a handbag girl either but this was too good to leave and it was offered to me at an incredible price. My fashion library has happened over many years.

What a find that bag is! I do love seeing you wear things from your impressive collection, and it’s no surprise that you’ve also made an academic study of fashion – that looks like a great reading list! The house you’re sitting in front of is charming too. Enjoy jacket weather!

Thank you Mary Katherine , the bag was one of those very lucky finds. As you can tell I do love both my fashion books and fashion. I must remember to tell my husband that my wardrobe is an academic study . This is our house , have lived here for more than 40 years. Jacket weather has gone for the next few days as we have a bit of a heatwave.

I love this outfit, and the bag and socks were made for each other, both lovely. You are inspiring me to use what I have in my closet—now I better organize it!

What an amazing bag, and I’m loving the sight of your fashion and style library! In spite of her formidable age, I was quite shocked to learn that Iris Apfel passed away. She was such an icon! xxx

I am sorry this is happening Nancy, I have checked my spam box and they don’t go there so I am at a loss to explain why I don’t receive them . I was so pleased when I happened upon the rubber bag.

That’s a great quote. I immediately think of people that are so uninterested in other people these days. That’s a very pretty bag, love that’s its from rubber.

Thank you Gail , hope you are enjoying your Mothers Day with your Mum.
The bag was one of those lucky finds even though the colour is a bit tricky for me. I do love a good brogue and will wear them more through Autumn. I do spend many hours revisiting my books.

I love that bag, such a great sculptural piece which fits in perfectly with your fabulous style!
Accidental Icon by Iris Apfel is on my bookshelf, too – I loved her wit and amazingly, can’t give a f**k more is more dress sense, I’d have looked to have trawled the shops with her. I need to hunt down a copy of the legendary authors book, it sounds right up my street. Have you read Sarah Jane Adams’ My Life in a Box? I love that she’s such a magpie and keeps everything for years! xxx
