Hair Over The Years

Hello everyone , hope all is well in your part of the world.

The idea for today’s post came about after a visit to my hairdresser, Jamie on Monday. We discussed the many colours and cuts I have had over the years.

May as well start early on  I was probably about two when this was taken. The big bows were very popular in the 1950’s.

My first fringe(bangs) , I guess I was about five , my goodness it was a short one. I still remember that dress it had pink carnations all over and a bright pink cumberband. My doll was named Maryanne , she was a favourite but no idea what happened to her.

Fast forward to my teenage years , the long hair years throughout high school , well it was the late 60s- early 70s. It was a time of ponytails, plaits and pigtails , remember those. I would have been about sixteen when this was taken , I think the chocker is a giveaway.

My long hair days continued for several years until I decided to go short for my first overseas trip in 1975. Why I went short then is a mystery to me , maybe I thought it would be easier to manage while travelling. I also decided to perm my hair for my wedding in 1976, another mistake on my part , isn’t it hideous , this was taken on my honeymoon.

Now onto the blonde, bob days of my thirties and beyond . This was a professional shot taken when I did a self confidence course with a local lady who also ran a modelling school.

The blonde bob varied over the years , sometimes shorter or longer with a fringe or a side part , once even with shaved sides. I played with different highlights and shades of blonde , either at home or the hairdresser depending on funds at the time.

Photos of me in my child rearing days are in short supply. I was generally family photographer so busy taking children’s photos as opposed to being in them.

I started the blog as a way of expressing myself as I turned sixty. This was taken on a trip with friends to Sydney to celebrate my special birthday. Still a blondish bob this time with a side part.

The longer blonde bob with a fringe that I wore for quite a time was possibly my favourite , that is until I opted for a colour change.

I am never one to do things by half so my colour change was anything but subtle . It was fun at the time even though it was high maintenance – red hair fades at a lightening pace.

Over the years I had at times played at growing out my colour and embracing my natural colour but it never seemed to work out and I coloured again. I firmly believe you know when the time is right for you. That time came for me last July when I asked Jamie to cut my hair really short to reveal my natural colour. At this point my hair hadn’t been coloured for several months due to chemo. Both Jamie and I were thrilled with both cut and colour and it will stay this way for the near future. My husband is still not a fan , can’t please everyone.

Taken at a local picnic and swimming spot the day after a haircut wearing favourite Rundholz pants and a Camilla and Marc short, faded denim jacket, United Nude shoes and a leather heart brooch from my recent Paris trip. I had just had a follow up visit to my surgeon , all good, but needed time outside before heading home. Last night I paired the denim jacket with my coffee tulle skirt for a function at local store , Yeltour , to celebrate the opening of their revamped store. I would once have never paired them together but I loved it and received many kind comments.

A big thank you for all the lovely and helpful comments on my last post, changes will happen but over time. Have a great week everyone.

Fun look at your hair over the years! I have had a bob of some sort for the last few years. I have found that it is easier to just wash and dry and it looks good without any effort. I do get highlights twice a year to cover some of the grey/white. I don’t see myself changing my hairstyle for a long while.

Thank you so very much Mirielle, glad you enjoyed a look back at some of my hair styles, both good and bad. I had some type of bob for many years and agree it was easy to style and always looked good.

What a fun subject for a post … I once did something similar.
I loved seeing your hair colours and cuts over the years. And I guess most people have had a bad perm at least once in their lives ๐Ÿ™‚ Loving your current short grey do. It suits both you and your quirky wardrobe! xxx

Interesting post. While I like your current hair style and color, my favorite style is the bob with side part. You always look so stylish!

How fun to see all your hairstyles over the years! I also knew when it was time to stop dyeing my hair, although it took a few tries before I was really ready. And even now I still dye it, but itโ€™s my real grey and white under the lavender.

Thanks so much Sheila, I enjoyed looking back at some of my hairstyles over the years, both good and bad. I agree most of us do know when its time for us to stop the permanent colour.

Thanks Elizabeth , agree we all have had so many different styles , good and bad over time. I love that we both had the same dress as little girls, so pleased you sent me the photo.

What a fabulous – and beautifully illustrated post, Jill! Your current hair looks so good, I’m glad you’re happy with it, too.
Although the colour’s changed over the years, as an adult mine’s always been long. I wore it short as a child (Mum was useless with hair) and was always being mistaken for being a boy, I was mortified when I went to see Father Xmas and being given a train set! xxx

Thank you so much Vix , it was fun to write and look back over the years. I really can’t imagine you with short hair , your long hair is so much a part of your look. I would have been miffed is I got a train set too.

I loved seeing your hairstyles over the years. I had a couple of perms in the 70s too. A big mistake! I love your style and natural colour now.

Thank you so much Gail , it was fun looking back over the years. Glad I’m not the only one who had a bad perm in the 70s. I am pleased with my natural colour and short style.

Fascinating look at the changes you’ve made to your hair over the years.

I also had perms done in the 60s and 70s and rather liked the look. And like you my hair changes all the time – just had it slightly trimmed and not all that happy with it. Are we ever satisfied? Also I totally agree with you that one does know when to stop colouring the hair. I coloured for years and then – it was time.

Loved all the photos of you through the years.

Thank you Penny , it was fun looking back over some of my hairstyles over the years. I think many of us played with perms back then . Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks for the hair to settle down aafter a cut I find.

Oh, goodness! What was it with those short bangs back then? I always had a pixie cut with the really short bangs, but I also had a cow lick to the side. Do you call them cow licks or some other fun name? I colored my hair for years, but I never did anything fun with the color. It didn’t help that my hairstylist was my little sister who doesn’t have an adventurous bone in her body! Now, I have my natural silver that my stylist and I play with from time to time! I love your hair colored or not!

Thank you Marsha , it was fun looking back over my many hairstyles over the years. The really short bangs never were a good look . Yes we call them cow licks too. Your hair is really pretty , be it silver or coloured.
